How to Teach Numbers the Montessori Way

I am a 3rd Generation Montessori guide and I am going to go step by step exactly how I would teach numbers 1-9 do in the Montessori classroom.

First, you want to make sure your child is ready to learn numbers If you are not sure check out my FREE Math Readiness Guide where I teach you exactly what signs to look for to know if your child is developmentally ready. 

Once your child is ready to learn letters you must understand the 4 steps we use in Montessori. 

1: Introduce quantity:

In Montessori we first introduce the quantity of numbers before the symbol. We do this using the material Number rods Linked Here

2: Introduce Symbol

Once the child has been introduced to the quantity of numbers 1-10 then we introduce the symbol using the Sandpaper numbers Linked Here

3: Match quantity and symbol together

The child is now ready to put the quantity and symbol together using the Spindle box Linked Here

4: Practice

Time to practice practice practice until the child has mastered the concept. One way of practicing is by using the cards and counters Linked Here
