What are Sandpaper Numbers?
Jan 16, 2025If you've heard of Montessori then you are likely to have heard or seen Montessori Sandpaper numbers before, as they are a classic Montessori material used to teach children numbers! But what exactly are they?
Montessori sandpaper numbers are a tactile learning tool used in Montessori education to teach children the shapes and names of the basic numbers 0-9.
Each number is typically crafted from sandpaper, providing a sensory experience as children trace their fingers along the textured surface.
This hands-on approach helps reinforce the number name and shape as well as encourages the development of fine motor skills.
For instance, when a child first learns a number they will be encouraged to trace the number by running their fingers over the sandpaper number 1 while simultaneously saying the corresponding name, fostering a multi-sensory connection between the visual, tactile, and auditory aspects of language learning. Sandpaper numbers are also teaching correct formation which is an important pre-writing skill.
In a Montessori classroom, Sandpaper numbers are used when formally introducing the number symbol to the child for the first time. Previous to this lesson that child has been introduced to the quantity of each number using number rods.
The teacher chooses 3 random numbers and introduces them with a 3 Period Lesson
a 3 period lesson is the way we introduce any new concepts or vocabulary to the child. If you want to learn how to do a 3 period lesson, Click Here
Each number is introduced to the child through a 3 period lesson.
Then the child practices the numbers through repetition. I like to play fun learning games to keep it fun and engaging. I have a list of 5 fun learning games that can be used for letters and numbers Click Here
Through repeated exploration of various sandpaper numbers, children gradually build a solid foundation in numbers 0-9, promoting a hands-on and multisensory approach to language acquisition in the Montessori method.
Don't be fooled by companies labeling toys and materials as Montessori! There are tons of mislabeled products so be sure you buy authentic sandpaper numbers that are:
-Lined with sandpaper
-typically green although it doesn't really matter what color they are as long as they are all the same color.
I personally use a set from amazon that I love and fits all the criteria, you can find them Here
